For years, Timor‑Leste relied on satellites and microwave links for international connectivity—expensive and delay‑prone. In 2024, that began to change when the Timor‑Leste South Submarine Cable (TLSSC) landed in Dili, linking directly to Australia’s North West Cable System. The system is reported to support up to ~27 Tbps of capacity, vastly improving international bandwidth.

This new digital lifeline can unlock lower latency, cheaper data, and a platform for cloud services, e‑government, and local startups. But it’s only the start: without sustained investment in last‑mile access, rural communities will lag. Transparent, open‑access governance will matter as much as fiber strands.
